Tactic #4—Target the Hiring Manager

Keep in mind that sending your resume into targeted companies where you’d like to go to work and where you know you would bring added value is not enough.

You need to identify the hiring manager in each of those companies. In other words, you need to identify the person who would be your potential boss. That’s the one person in the organization who can truly appreciate the value you bring to the table.

How do you find the names of hiring managers in your targeted companies? This is where your professional network comes in, particularly the people you’re connected with on the business-oriented social media site LinkedIn. (If you’re not already on LinkedIn you need to be! It’s free, and it’s a fabulous tool to help you not only build and nurture a professional network, but also to gain exposure to the business community and identify targeted hiring managers. Target veterans within LinkedIn who work for the companies you have identified as a possible employer. Join the groups in which you have a common interest. Each branch of the service has several categories. If you were part of the 101st Airborne, then research the group and join it. After that, review what organizations you have in common. LinkedIn is the way to attain the intelligence you need to achieve your new objective.
